Win or Go Home! Stock Car Racing at Millennium Con!

Brian Weathersby has come up with a pretty good stock car racing game playable with any models, paper counters, or Hot Wheels, which is what we used. Brian ran three races and all finished within 2 hours - what a coincidence.

We had 3 - 6 players each race and most were newbies. After a few turns everyone caught on to how it plays and could concentrate on strategy.

Using the Pack around the Track rules from Charioteer, everyone was involved in every turn.

Look for more in the next couple of months.

  1. I think it's a GREAT game, but then again, I might be a little biased....

  2. How different is it or is it just chariots with a different skin?

    1. Very different. Biggest one is the races can last between 100 to 300 laps (?!). This is handled by drawing Lap Cards that will burn a minimum of 5 laps and a maximum of 25. With a reshuffle card you can't count cards.

Next big change is Performance degradation and Pit Stops. It makes for a very strategic game.

There's Trading Paint, hitting the wall, Bump & Run passing and more stock car racing specific strategies and tactics.

      Definitely not Steel Chariots.

    2. Along with what Ed mentioned, another difference is in the caution flags. Certain types of accidents will bring out a caution flag for either 1D6 or 2D6 laps. These caution laps may be increased if it is a multi-car accident. These laps are still counted, but there is no racing going on during them. Consequently, this makes it even harder to count laps, because it might not always be evenly divisible by 5.

Pit stops are not available on a 1D6 caution. So, if you were nursing that damaged car (the Performance degradation that Ed mentioned) hoping to slip in a pit stop, the caution can throw off your plans.

In the campaign game, there is no working your way up from the minors. You are assumed to start at the peak of the sport. However, if your Fame rating ever slips to zero, you have to roll versus your Savvy to see whether or not you get fired.

Overall, it shares some DNA with Charioteer, but it's not the same.

  3. Was able to watch the late Saturday evening game of this with the wife. We both thought it was very cool and a nice family game as the laps allow it to easily fit into any time you have. We can't wait to get more info on this and hopefully we will see it soon!

    1. Definitely a family game as well. I have twin 10 year old grandsons and they caught on very quick.
